The Diploma - starting in 2008

From September 2008, a new qualification, called The Diploma, is being introduced. This is a qualification based around work rather than traditional subjects. It will combine classroom study with hands on experience.

The Diploma will be available at different levels:

  • The Foundation Diploma is a level 1 qualification, equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades D to G.
  • The Higher Diploma is a level 2 qualification, equivalent to 7 GCSEs at grades A* - C.
  • The Advanced Diploma is a level 3 qualification, equivalent to 3 and a half A levels.
  • The Progression Diploma is a level 3 qualification, equivalent to 2 and a half A levels.

Each Diploma consists of:

  • Principal learning - understanding and knowledge about the sector
  • Generic learning - functional skills in English, maths and ICT, personal, learning and thinking skills, a project and work experience
  • Additional/specialist learning

GCSEs or A levels can be included as part of your Diploma or you can take them as separate subjects alongside it.

Diplomas are offered by schools and colleges working together, so you may do parts of your learning in different environments.

Diplomas will eventually be available in a range of subjects. In 2008, the Creative and Media Diploma will be offered by some schools and colleges in Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire. From 2009, Diplomas in Engineering, Information Technology, Construction and the Built Environment, Society, Health and Development, Hair and Beauty Studies and Environmental and Land-based studies will be available in some parts of Cambridgeshire.
