Money to learn - for young parents

Under 20?  With a child? Thinking about returning to learning?

Then read on to find out more about the financial help available to you.

Care to Learn

If you are a parent aged under 20 and planning to go back to learning, full or part-time, Care to Learn can help towards your childcare costs.

You can study full or part-time, at school or college, or take part in work based training. Whatever you do, as long as you use a registered childcare provider to look after your child, Care to Learn will help towards the costs. Your personal adviser will be able to tell you more or follow the link here to the Care to Learn website.

Learner Support Funds

All further education colleges will have funds to help those students in financial difficulties. These are designed to help with the cost of books, equipment and childcare. You need to speak to the welfare office at your college.

Education Maintenance Allowances (EMA)

An EMA is a weekly allowance paid to students who are in full time learning or have started training as an unwaged trainee. Students whose annual family income is less than £30,810 (2007 / 2008) will be paid up to £30  a week to help towards the cost of their learning.

You can get more information here - just follow the weblink from this page, or from your school, college or Connexions Centre.

Part time learning - you don't have to learn full time or with a college or school. You may be able to learn at home with distance learning packages or through learndirect. This way you can combine looking after your child with developing your skills for work. You can find out more on the "Learning at a distance" page.
