Staying safe - you need to know how to look after yourself when you are out and about.
Here are some simple, common sense ways to stay safe:
Going out
- Tell someone where you are going, when you plan to be back and how you are getting home.
- If possible travel with a friend or goup of friends.
- Keep your mobile with you. If you don't have one make sure you have a phone card or some spare change with you.
- Always have the number of a well-known taxi company with you and carry spare money for a phone call and taxi fare.
- Don't accept rides from unlicensed, independent taxi drivers.
- If you walk home, try to get someone you trust to walk with you.
- Stay alert - don't use your MP3 or mobile as it will stop you from being aware of what is going on around you.
- Carry a "screech" alarm and keep it ready in your hand, not in your bag or pocket.
- Always wait for a bus or train in a well-lit place and near others if possible.
- Beware of 'spiked' drinks - always keep your drink with you.
- If you meet someone new and they offer you a drink either politely refuse or go with them and watch the drink being poured.
Trust your instincts - if you don't feel things are right, don't ignore them, act on them straightaway.
