Where to look for jobs

Looking for a job or training place? Make sure you look in all the likely places.

Why not try some of the following:

  • Your local Connexions Centre - will know about vacancies for the under 19s including Apprenticeships. You can see details of current local vacancies on this website and Apprenticeship opportunities are advertised on Apprenticeships online (see related websites). If the job you're interested in is not advertised, your Connexions Centre may be able to help you with addresses of possible local employers to try.
  • Many schools and colleges will also have vacancy notice boards for current full and part-time opportunities.  Check them regularly.
  • Your local newspaper will advertise details of vacancies in your local area. Find out which day is best. Sometimes vacancies for school leavers are advertised earlier than you think - maybe even before Christmas.  So start your job search early.  Most are also advertised on the Internet so check out the website of your local and neighbouring papers.
  • Your friends and relatives are also good sources of information - they can tell you about vacancies advertised at their work plus let you know if any vacancies are likely to arise.
  • Many factories and shops have vacancy signs near their entrances. Local shops and post offices are also worth checking.
  • Websites - many employers put vacancy information on their websites. Check out the companies you're interested in.  There are also hundreds of websites for job seekers. Many advertise vacancy details some in general areas others more specialist. You can also find lots of advice on looking for work, CVs, letter writing and interview techniques.
  • Private employment agencies mainly deal with vacancies for experienced workers but some will have vacancies for young people. You could check out the ones in your area.
  • Jobcentre plus - mainly deals with vacancies for over 18s. Occasionally they will advertise vacancies for younger people - it's worth checking.

Think creatively - remember lots of jobs are never even advertised - being in the right place at the right time is also important.

Don't forget to contact your local Connexions Centres for help and advice.
