Apprenticeships are for those who want to work and train at the same time.
There are different types of Apprenticeship and where you start depends partly on your GCSE grades and partly on the type of work you want to do.
Advanced Apprenticeships
You usually need 4 GCSEs grade C or above to start an Advanced Apprenticeship. You work towards NVQ level 3 and other qualifications as part of your training.
Apprenticeships
There are no set entry requirements but you will usually be asked to sit an assessment test to make sure you will be able to cope with the work and training. Apprentices work towards NVQ level 2 plus other relevant qualifications.
Most Apprenticeships are offered by employers - they decide who they are going to employ and train. The training is generally organised by a training provider who makes sure that you get the right training at work and at college / training centre.
Programme Led Apprenticeships
Programme Led Apprenticeships are mainly for people who want an Apprenticeship but are waiting to find an employer. You are able to start gaining the knowledge and qualifications you need so that as soon as there's a vacancy you can move into an Apprenticeship.
You can apply for an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) to give you some money while you are on your Programme Led Apprenticeship; when you move to an Apprenticeship you start being paid by your employer.
