New Deal for 18 - 24 year olds

If you are aged 18 - 24 and have been unemployed and claiming Jobseeker's Allowance for 6 months or more, then New Deal for Young People is for you. You may be able to join if you have been unemployed for a shorter period -ask at your local Jobcentre Plus for details.

So, what's New Deal all about?

New Deal is a way to help you improve your skills to find the job you want. It does this by providing you with lots of practical help with job seeking plus gives you new opportunities to study, train and gain work experience.

How does it work?

On New Deal you will have your own personal adviser who will:

  • Discuss with you what kind of job you'd like
  • Draw up an action plan to help you get that job
  • Help you look and apply for jobs
  • Help you overcome any barriers that might be stopping you getting work
  • Identify and sort out any extra support you might need.

If you don't find a job during this time, you and your personal adviser will put together a package of training or work experience that will help you back into work.

What you do will depend on your individual circumstances but for example you could:

  • Get help to improve your skills
  • Have work experience with a local employer, voluntary group or community group
  • Get practical help and advice to move into self-employment if you want to
  • Get some practice job interviews.

What do I have to do?

You will be expected to work with your personal adviser, take advantage of the help offered and go to all the interviews arranged for you.
Your Jobseeker's Allowance may be at risk if you don't make the most of the opportunities given to you.
