Starting work at 16+ - money matters

Starting work?

If you start work or an employed Apprenticeship you will be paid a wage.

There is a National Minimum Wage for 16 / 17 year olds. Currently this is £3.40 per hour. However this does not apply to apprentices.

Starting a Programme Led Apprenticeship or E2E?

You will not be paid a wage; instead you apply for an EMA - see link here for more details.

Your parents/carers will carry on getting child benefit and, if eligible, child tax credit for you. Any other benefits they receive will be unaffected.
