Tips for travelling:
- Find out about the country you are visiting through books, websites and the Foreign and Commonwealth Travel Advice Unit.
- Do you need a visa? Many countries outside Europe require one. Check with the embassy or consulate of the country you are visiting to find out their regulations - do this well in advance of travelling.
- Know how to find the British Embassy or Consulate for the country you are visiting. If you lose your passport, run into problems with the police or have any other trouble, they should be able to provide you with information and advice.
- Let people know your travel schedule and ways to contact you if there is an emergency at home.
- Make copies of your passports, visas, insurance and tickets. Take one set of copies with you and leave another at home. If you end up losing your important documents, they'll be easier to replace.
- Plan your budget ahead of time and give yourself a bit extra for emergencies.
- While your bank card will work in many countries, it is a good idea to carry some cash, travellers cheques and a credit card as well.
- Keep your money, traveller's cheques and passport in a money belt and out of view. Don't flash your money around when paying for goods.
- Don't hitchhike. It isn't safe anywhere - even if you're with a friend, you're still taking a risk.
